2024 Energy Conference – Unleashing Canada’s Potential
Press Release
May 8, 2024
A collaborative energy policy dialogue hosted in partnership with the C.D. Howe Institute.
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute and the C.D. Howe Institute came together in Toronto to host a dialogue on the future of Canada’s energy and natural resource policy.
The event took place with Chatham house rules in place but significant themes emerged, including:
- Canada’s abundant energy security has made us complacent. Will it take a crisis to wake us up to our energy needs?
- Economic reconciliation with indigenous communities is Canada’s competitive advantage.
- Government needs to stop trying to pick winners in the sector.
- Small changes in energy prices will compound through an entire economy.
- Uncertainty from incoherent, stacking government regulations has sent investors running.
- Some Canadians seem ashamed of the centrality of energy and natural resources to our economy… they shouldn’t be. The Canadian energy and natural resource industry is the foundation of our prosperity; our industry is technologically innovative and world leading.
We are grateful to the many thoughtful, esteemed speakers and guests who made the conference a stirring success.
