Indigenous Peoples will have to wait a little longer for affordable housing in Cambridge.

With the opening of the K-W Urban Native Wigwam Project (KWUNWP) transitional housing development last week in Waterloo, all eyes will be on the non-profit group’s build at 27 to 31 Cambridge St. to service the First Nations, Métis and Inuit population.

The move-in date for the 30-unit development — with 16 of the units specifically dedicated to Indigenous women and their children — has seen “a few hiccups,” according to KWUNWP executive director Lee Ann Hundt, and has been pushed back more than once due to material supply issues. The original move-in date was December 2022.

She feels “somewhat safe” families and individuals will be coming through the doors in March 2024.

“We are very excited about a spring move-in,” Hundt said. “We are also thrilled to be in the city of Cambridge … for the first time.”
