Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) extends its congratulations to the 25th premier of Manitoba, the Honourable Wab Kinew, who has made history as the first-ever First Nations citizen to be elected as Premier of Manitoba. We also commend the newly appointed members of the Manitoba Executive Council who were sworn in during the premier’s historic inauguration this morning:
The Honourable Uzoma Asagwara, Minister of Health, Seniors, and Long-Term Care and Deputy Premier;
The Honourable Ronald Kostyshyn, Minister of Agriculture and Minister;
The Honourable Matt Wiebe, Minister of Justice and Attorney General and as Keeper of the Great Seal of Manitoba and Minister responsible for MPI;
The Honourable Nahanni Fontaine, Minister of Families and Minister responsible for Accessibility and Minister responsible for Gender Equity;
The Honourable Bernadette Smith, Minister of Housing, Addictions and Homelessness and Minister responsible for Mental Health;
The Honourable Nello Altomare, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning;
The Honourable Ian Bushie, Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations and Minister of Indigenous Economic Development;
The Honourable Malaya Marcelino, Minister of Labour and Immigration and Minister responsible for the Workers Compensation Board;
The Honourable Jamie Moses, Minister of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources;
The Honourable Lisa Naylor, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Consumer Protection and Government Services;
The Honourable Adrien Sala, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba Public Service;
The Honourable Renee Michelle Cable, Minister of Advanced Education and Training;
The Honourable Tracy Schmidt, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Efficiency Manitoba;
The Honourable Glen Simard, Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism, and Minister responsible for Manitoba Liquor and Lottery Corporation and Francophone Affairs
The inauguration, held at The Leaf, was attended by Grand Chiefs and Chiefs from all over Manitoba and featured the lighting of the Qulliq, the Norman Chief Memorial Dancers and Dakota Hotain Singers. The swearing-in was conducted by Lieutenant Governor Anita Neville.
AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, who attended today’s event, said the following, “True greatness arises when we all work together, and as we move forward hand in hand, I am confident that under Premier Kinew’s leadership, what has happened here in Manitoba will inspire generations to come.”
