As Ottawa rekindles ties with the monarchy, B.C.’s former capital spits on our heritage
Queen Victoria named the city of New Westminster, B.C., in 1859. It was the original capital of the province; hence it was a “new” Westminster, the seat of the British government.

Though the city only retained its capital status for around eight years — until the province merged with the colony of Vancouver Island and began using the island’s capital, Victoria, instead — New Westminster has been known as the “Royal City” for 166 years. Until now.
