Ancestral Indigenous remains that were unearthed at Sauble Beach last week have been laid back to rest in a ceremonial burial.
Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie confirmed the remains were reburied on Wednesday at the same location they came from in South Bruce Peninsula.
Ritchie said Thursday that the ceremony and the week leading up to it was very emotional for members of the community.
“It was a very emotional time and just recognizing and reaffirming that our people have always been here in this area,” said Ritchie. “Our people never had cemeteries like people have cemeteries today.
“That is a very colonial way of doing things and we have had a different world view and a different concept around that, so it is reaffirming our connection to the land and reaffirming that we have always been here.”
