The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) has announced its nominees for an upcoming election for Grand Chief to fill the role that was left vacant after the sudden passing of Cathy Merrick last year.
In a Sunday release, AMC, which represents 63 Manitoba First Nations, released their official list of prospects for the position, which includes a total of four candidates that will now vie for the position.
Candidates include Kyra Wilson, who is the former Chief of the Long Plain First Nation. She did not complete a first term, however, after some questioned the validity of the community’s 2023 election due to a snowstorm. A committee ordered that a new by-election be called where David Meeches was elected chief of Long Plain.
