Press Release
September 10, 2024
(Lheidli T’enneh Territory, Prince George, BC) – The BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing last week of Grand Chief Cathy Ann Merrick of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and a member of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation. She was a tireless and passionate advocate for Treaty rights, First Nations rights, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2-Spirit people (MMIWG2S). In recent years, Grand Chief Merrick passionately and urgently pursued justice and equality for missing persons in Manitoba’s landfills and their families. As a committed and fearless leader for First Nations, she will be most profoundly missed.
As First Nations leaders, family, and friends in Manitoba and across the country mourn this significant loss, BCAFN pledges to continue her legacy of advocacy and championing First Nations rights and MMIWG2S. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Manitoba Region during this difficult time. May the Creator bless her as she continues her journey.
