Bruce Power announces Canadian at our Core, a commitment to leadership in uncertain economic times

Bruce Power is proud of the role it plays in providing reliable made-in-Canada electricity and cancer-fighting medical isotopes with a domestic supply chain that has an economic impact felt across the Clean Energy Frontier region of Bruce, Grey and Huron Counties, Ontario and Canada.

The company has launched a Canadian at our Core campaign, committing to continue to promote the made-in-Ontario and Canada nuclear industry and urging its partners and suppliers to buy local, and buy Canadian. Closer to home in the Clean Energy Frontier Region of Bruce, Grey and Huron Counties, Bruce Power is encouraging, suppliers, employees and the community to shop local to support the economy.

Bruce Power’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President, James Scongack, said Ontario’s energy industry is a world leader and can help to stabilize the economy in these uncertain times.

“Bruce Power is one of Canada’s largest private investors in critical infrastructure that provides clean, reliable, made-in-Canada electricity and life-saving medical isotopes,” Scongack said. “We can’t have economic security without energy security and our plan is to play a central role in the future of Canada’s electricity supply and to lead the world in medical isotope production.

“Bruce Power is launching our Canadian at our Core campaign because we’re proud of the role we play. We’re always humble that people are counting on us, and we’re dedicated to always improving while making a difference.”

Bruce Power’s commitment to buy local and products made in Canada has five key pillars:

1. The 95 per cent target: As one of the largest investors and only private operator of nuclear plants in Canada we will continue our work to target 95 per cent of all money we spend is in Canada including the operation of our facility, capital investments and procurement.
2. Supply Chain partnerships: Through our integrated supply chain, Bruce Power will be establishing a Made in Canada Council to find ways to leverage our existing supply chain to support Canada and Ontario’s economic growth and trade agenda, while finding new innovative ways to strengthen our domestic supply chain.
3. Buy Local in the Clean Energy Frontier Region: The Bruce Power Site is the largest in North America and is located on the traditional territories of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) and in the Tri County Region of Bruce, Grey and Huron Counties. We will work to ensure our key suppliers continue to expand their local presence, securing jobs and opportunities locally, while we direct more spend to local businesses.
4. Reconciliation through action: Bruce Power is committed to reconciliation with Indigenous communities and will work to strengthen our partnerships including the SON existing Gamzook’aamin aakoziwin isotope venture. We’re committed to securing more investment in these communities for a future that will ensure the next 50 years is different than the last 50 years by working together.
5. Isotopes for Hope: Bruce Power is committed to being a world-leader in the development and production of Made in Canada cancer-fighting medical isotopes to meet global needs and supporting the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council’s goal to double Canadian production by 2030.

“At a time when the United States has taken aim at our economy, our government is laser-focused on ensuring Ontarians have access to a domestic supply of affordable, reliable and clean energy,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines. “I’m so pleased to continue to work in partnership with Bruce Power to champion made-in-Ontario and made-in-Canada nuclear technology to power our economy. An unprecedented attack requires a united response that leverages more products made by, for, and in Canada.”

Bruce Power is also part of an integrated global nuclear industry that engages openly and shares collaboratively with a dedication to safety and operational excellence. The company will not allow trade disputes take its focus off and dedication to working with utilities partners around the world, including in the United States, from continuing this critical focus on excellence and safety that has been the hallmark of the industry for many decades.

Since the beginning of its Life-Extension program, more than 60 supplier partners have moved into the Clean Energy Frontier Region, continuing to support the local economy and provide good jobs in the area.

Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program is Canada’s largest private sector clean energy infrastructure project, with about 95 per cent of purchasing in Canada, supporting hundreds of businesses throughout the province. The Life-Extension Program creates significant, long-term employment for Ontario’s building and construction trades. It also secures a clean-energy future for Ontario while stimulating the economy by creating and sustaining 22,000 jobs across the province annually and generating billions in economic activity each year.
