Press Release

Fort McMurray, Alberta– The Northeastern Alberta Aboriginal Business Association (NAABA) is proud to announce that Calvin Helin, a bestselling multi-award-winning author, lawyer, international speaker, entrepreneur, and advocate for self-reliance, will be the keynote speaker at the 18th Annual NAABA Indigenous Business Summit. The event takes place on March 26 and 27, 2025, at Shell Place, MacDonald Island Park.

A champion for economic independence and personal empowerment, Helin is best known for his groundbreaking work on breaking free from economic dependency. His books, including Dances with Dependency: Out of Poverty through Self-Reliance and The Economic Dependency Trap: Breaking Free to Self-Reliance, have inspired Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities alike to foster sustainable economic success. His thought leadership has been widely featured in national media, and he continues to influence business, policy, and community development worldwide.

The NAABA Indigenous Business Summit will feature an exciting lineup of events, including the Quick Connect networking event, the return of the Certified Full Member Trade Show, educational sessions, an Indigenous artisan’s market and a revitalized banquet format showcasing a corporate breakfast with Helin’s keynote address. In it’s 18th year, this long-standing event has been revitalized with a fresh brand and an enhanced program, reinforcing NAABA’s commitment to supporting Indigenous business growth and economic opportunities in the region.

“We are thrilled to welcome Calvin Helin as our keynote speaker,” said NAABA Board Chair Sandy Sanderson. “His insights into self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and Indigenous economic empowerment align perfectly with NAABA’s mission to foster sustainable business opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs. His presence will undoubtedly inspire and energize attendees.”
