As per a late-night statement posted to his X account, controversial now-former Liberal candidate Paul Chiang has taken himself off the ballot in Markham — Unionville, Ont. but Liberal leader Mark Carney should be nevertheless be ready to field a flurry of follow-up questions on why he and his party rejected calls to remove Chiang from their candidate lineup as soon as his comments to a local Chinese-language media outlet, in which he suggested that a rival federal candidate “should be turned over to Chinese officials in return for a bounty,” hit the headlines last week.
“Carney faced numerous questions about Chiang at a Monday press conference in Vaughan, Ont., where he was announcing the Liberals’ plan to rapidly scale up homebuilding,” Canadian Press notes.
