The City of Castlegar is entering into a new phase and memorandum of understanding with the regional district in order to meet new Indigenous engagement requirements under the Emergency and Disaster Management Act.
Under the agreement, the city will transfer $40,000 in provincial funding to the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), which will lead a collaborative regional approach to “support respectful engagement with Indigenous governing bodies, cultural safety training, and the development of a sub-regional emergency management roadmap,” said Meeri Durand, acting director of community safety and development with the city, in her report to council.
The new EDMA requires that local governments collaborate and engage with Indigenous governing bodies (IGBs) across all phases of emergency management. To support the new requirements, the province has provided $40,000 of funding to each local authority.
