Celebrating Nunavut’s 25th Anniversary

Press Release

Iqaluit, Nunavut (March 27, 2024) – The Government of Nunavut invites Nunavummiut to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Nunavut’s creation with events across Nunavut throughout the year.

“I am delighted to celebrate this important milestone in our territory’s history,” said Premier P.J. Akeeagok. “Nunavut has grown and prospered over the past 25 years. We have shown Canada, and the world, the strength of our consensus-based political structure and what can be achieved when drawing from both Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and contemporary systems of governance. I hope this celebration inspires pride in young Nunavummiut, as they are the ones who will take our territory forward as we undergo the process of devolution from the Government of Canada and bring home decision making about our land, resources, and waters.”

On April 1, 2024, those in Iqaluit are invited to a community celebration at Aqsarniit Hotel and Conference Centre from 4:30 to 8 p.m. The celebration will include special guests, cultural showcases, entertainment, and country food.

The event will end with fireworks over Frobisher Bay at 8:30 p.m.

The celebration is open to the public, and buses will be available at key locations in Iqaluit to transport Elders to and from the event.

To ensure all communities can celebrate this milestone, each hamlet will receive a grant of at least $5,000 for local events to be hosted during the year.
