CANADIAN seafood is facing the threat of a ban by a number of high profile chefs in North America over Canada’s stance on seal hunting. Canada has been under the cosh for some time over the way it culls seals which many consider to be cruel. However, the whole saga has led to a war of words between various big names in the business.
Now, under the umbrella of the Chefs for Seals campaign launched by the Humane Society of the United States eight years ago, scores of restaurants and seafood stores and celebrity chefs have been calling for a boycott on Canadian seafood until commercial seal-hunting is ended.
Mario Batali, co-owner of the well known Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca and Del Posto in New York, stood by his decision to support the boycott and he tweeted: “I’m holding Canada accountable for its policy.
