Moose Jaw City Council voted unanimously on Sep. 25 to adopt the first-ever Indigenous Engagement Framework, designed to make it easier for everyone in Moose Jaw, from city council to administration to local businesses and residents, to engage respectfully with First Nations and Métis groups.
“Moose Jaw Indigenous population is growing — approximately 2,300 as of the last StatsCan info available, and that’s about 200 more than in 2016,” said Craig Hemingway, the city’s communications director.
“And for any person, business, or group that’s begun their Truth and Reconciliation journey, and is unsure about protocol, respectful engagement, hosting or attending cultural events, ceremony, land acknowledgements, when to provide an honorarium, how much is an honorarium, how much should it be, what kind of tobacco is appropriate for a gift, and maintaining relationships in general: This framework can be your guide.”
