Closure of Nunik Care Services youth group home

Cambridge Bay, Nunavut  On November 17, 2024, the Department of Family Services’ Family Wellness team in Cambridge Bay began an investigation into a report of child harm at the Nunik Care Services youth group home.

As a result of the department’s investigation, the Statutory Director of Family Wellness issued correspondence to Nunik Care Services’ Executive Director on January 10, 2025, rescinding Nunik Care Services’ approval to operate as a childcare facility under section 62(1) of the Child and Family Services Act.

A notice period of 60 days was authorized to facilitate the safe and orderly transition of children and youth from the facility.

The department is working diligently to ensure transition plans are in place for all residents.
