CNSC Renews Cameco’s Uranium Mine Licences for Key Lake, McArthur River and Rabbit Lake Operations

Following a public hearing, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to renew its uranium mine and mill operating licences for Cameco’s Key Lake, McArthur River and Rabbit Lake operations located in northern Saskatchewan. The 10-year licences will be valid from November 1, 2013 until October 31, 2023.

In making its decision, the Commission considered information presented at a public hearing held in La Ronge, Saskatchewan from October 1 to 3, 2013. During the public hearing, the Commission received and considered submissions from Cameco and 27 intervenors as well as CNSC staff recommendations.

During the term of the renewed licences, CNSC staff will provide annual reports on the operation of the three facilities at public proceedings of the Commission. Some of those proceedings will be held in northern Saskatchewan with public participation and a special focus on the environmental performance of these facilities, with emphasis on releases to air, water and soil.

The Summary Records of Proceedings are available in English upon request to the Commission Secretariat. They will be available, in both official languages, on the CNSC Web site at a later date. Transcripts of the hearing are available on the CNSC Web site at nuclearsafety.gc.ca, or by contacting the CNSC. The detailed Records of Proceedings, including Reasons for Decision will be published on the CNSC Web site at a later date. The webcast of the hearing is also archived on the same site for a period of 90 days.
