David Staples: How Edmonton is firmly and fairly shutting down tent encampments – Edmonton journal

It’s still early days. Things could spiral out of control again. It’s unlikely there will ever be a “mission accomplished” proclamation, not on chronic issues like drug addiction, crime and homelessness.

For now, though, Edmonton’s new policies are succeeding in dismantling tent encampments, getting vulnerable people off the streets, and bringing some relief to neighborhoods hammered by open drug use and gang activity.

If you now drive through Chinatown and other areas plagued by the human tragedy that comes with folks living in tent encampments, it’s remarkable but in a good way. You might see the odd tent or two, but the large encampments are gone.
