Do the Junos still matter? We spoke to four first-time nominees about what the awards show means today – The Star

The Star caught up with Omega Mighty, Bambii, Smalltown DJs and Zoon to discuss the importance of the biggest award show in Canadian music.

It’s always been fashionable among music fans to scoff at major award shows. Notoriously narrow in scope and conservative in taste, these institutions have long been criticized for rewarding popularity over quality; mainstream success over artistic merit.

And yet, for independent artists, both emerging and established, that kind of recognition is one of the few remaining ways to elevate one’s career.

The Juno Awards — which recognizes outstanding achievements in Canada’s music industry — have in recent years expanded and refined their award categories to better reflect the country’s evolving music scene.
