Edmonton Remand Centre mental health care ‘completely inadequate,’ judge says in report on inmate’s suicide – Edmonton Examiner

A report on the death of an Edmonton Remand Centre inmate paints a dire picture of mental health care inside the jail and warns that without improvements similar deaths are “likely.”

The Alberta government on Wednesday released the results of a fatality inquiry into the death of Jonathan Wayne Anderson, 40, who died by suicide in March 2020.

Anderson, an Indigenous hip-hop artist from Saskatchewan who performed as Tommy Da, asked to see a psychologist to obtain a prescription to help with depression one month before his death. He also asked to begin a Suboxone prescription for drug withdrawal.
