Press Release
September 17, 2024
The Baffin Island Caribou harvest for 2024-2025 in Pangnirtung is closed effective immediately. Therefore, no further harvesting is permitted as the Pangnirtung Hunters and Trappers Organization’s allotted tags have been exhausted.
The community’s allocation of 58 caribou from the Total Allowable Harvest (TAH) for 2024-2025 from the Baffin Island Caribou population has been reached.
If you have harvested caribou prior to this closure notice, you are still responsible for reporting your harvest to the Wildlife Office.
Any additional harvesting of Baffin Island Caribou by Pangnirtung without allocation during the 2024-2025 season is in violation of the Nunavut Wildlife Act. Violations will be investigated and may lead to enforcement action.
The TAH was established by the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board to support the recovery of the Baffin Island Caribou population and is a critical piece in the co-management efforts to allow the herd to recover and provide harvesting opportunities for future generations.
