Press Release
June 24, 2024
The Department of Family Services is pleased to announce the results of the Family Wellness facility naming contest, which received an overwhelming response from Nunavummiut. Over 30 suggestions were submitted, reflecting strong community engagement and interest in this initiative.
We are excited to announce the chosen name for the newly opened Family Wellness Building 439 in Iqaluit as Ilagiinniq Wellness Centre – meaning “Family that supports each other.”
The Ilagiinniq Wellness Centre is equipped with bedrooms, programming areas, and office amenities, creating a platform for the Iqaluit Family Wellness team to engage with families.
In urgent circumstances and in the absence of emergency foster placement, this facility will provide a secure and nurturing environment for children. Additionally, the centre will host a supervised visitation program, enabling important visits between children in care and their parents or guardians. The new space will allow for further program development focused on supporting children and their families.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Elders for their invaluable wisdom and guidance in selecting the final name. Their contributions have been crucial to this process.
The winning submission created by Helen-Rose Sulurayok was awarded a $500 gift card.
