Federal and provincial governments called on for action at Grassy Narrows First Nation – Kenora Daily Miner

NDP candidate Howard Hampton directly blamed the Conservative government of Stephen Harper for the conditions because “the Department of Aboriginal Affairs lapsed a total of $712.9 million of funds approved by parliament in 2014. At the same time many Northern Ontario communities have lived without potable water for over ten years.”

The Grassy Narrows state of emergency followed an Ontario Ministry of Environment test that found turbidity at a level 120 times the safety limit, elevated levels of uranium and possible carcinogens in the drinking water. The community has been under a boil water advisory for over a year and water issues have persisted for a number of years.
