Two Wei Wai Kum First Nation members want to delay a treaty ratification vote by members of the K’ómoks First Nation on Saturday
As members of the K’ómoks First Nation begin to vote on treaty ratification more than 30 years in the making, two Wei Wai Kum First Nation members have launched legal action in an attempt to delay the vote, citing concerns that their Indigenous title rights could be extinguished if the treaty ever comes in force.
Eligible voters are expected to flock to the K’ómoks administrative office near Courtenay on Saturday to vote on a draft treaty with the B.C. and federal governments that’s been in the making since 1994.
But lawyers representing Laich-kwil-tach matriarch Nancy Henderson and Wei Wai Kum elected chief councillor Chris Roberts have filed an injunction request in the B.C. Supreme Court seeking a delay.
