Gjoa Haven to remain a prohibited community for alcohol

Press Release

Gjoa Haven, Nunavut (October 24, 2023) – In a plebiscite held on October 23, Gjoa Haven residents voted to continue the current prohibited alcohol control system in their community. Only 155 voters, or 40 per cent of voters, were in favour of moving towards a restricted quantities system.

Under the Liquor Act, at least 60 per cent of votes in favour are needed to change the local alcohol control system in a community.

“There will be no changes to the liquor system in Gjoa Haven,” said Minister of Finance Lorne Kusugak. “Thank you to the residents for voting in the plebiscite.”

The consumption, possession, purchase, sale, or transport of liquor will continue to be prohibited in Gjoa Haven.
