On Wednesday the 63 First Nations leaders comprising the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs will select a successor to the late Cathy Merrick. The position of Grand Chief has been vacant since Sept. 6 when Merrick, 63, suddenly passed away during a Winnipeg press scrum.
Four candidates for the by-Election emerged from the nomination process, which required an endorsement signature from seven electors. With 28 of the votes essentially committed, the four hopefuls are manoeuvering for support from the 35 “uncommitted” ballots at the AMC Chiefs Assembly at Canad Inns Polo Park.
The most familiar name of the group is former Peguis First Nation Chief Glenn Hudson, who has been in the public eye since first being elected chief of his home community in 2007, serving six terms and 14 years in total.
