Message from Gwich’in Tribal Council Regarding 2020 Annual General Assembly
The Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC) will be holding the 2020 Annual General Assembly (AGA) on September 5th, in accordance with the GTC Bylaws. However, it will not be the typical Assembly that people are accustomed to seeing; it will be much smaller and done via computer due to Covid-19 restrictions on public gatherings and general safety concerns during the Pandemic.
After much discussion and with the health/safety of Assembly delegates and other Participants as a prime consideration, it was decided that the AGA will cover only the business items that are absolutely necessary and that delegates and GTC Directors will participate by computer video from a central location in their home communities. The AGA will be live-streamed on Facebook Live so that interested Participants can view the proceedings. The Assembly business will be limited to approval of audited financial statements, Director appointments including GSC, Report of the Chief Returning Officer, and the inauguration of the newly elected Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief.
The plan will be to hold a more typical Assembly, it will be a Special Assembly, in several months’ time when the gathering restrictions are eased and the newly elected Executive will have had the benefit of being in office for several months. The Special Assembly would include community resolutions, by-law amendments, subsidiary reports, Participant forum as well as the opportunity to gather in person as a nation. In the meantime, until a Special Assembly is set, Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring questions and/or concerns forward to GTC through their DGO Director representatives on the GTC Board or to GTC directly.
The written GTC Annual Report will be available in both printed and digital form prior to the September 5th AGA.
