imagineNATIVE at the 2014 Berlinale

TORONTO – The imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival heads into the 64th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) with a new shorts programme spotlighting Canadian Indigenous talent. Curated by Jason Ryle, imagineNATIVE’s Executive Director, Reel Kanata II presents a collection of eight short films at the Embassy of Canada in conjunction with the Berlinale’s NATIVe section which spotlights Indigenous Cinema.
“Last year’s launch of NATIVe was a great success and opened up new audiences to the artistry and wonder of Indigenous Cinema,” Ryle says. “This year’s Berlinale gives us the opportunity to showcase a new selection of Indigenous-made works from Canada and build on the remarkable momentum created last year. We are incredibly thrilled to once again partner with the Berlinale, the Embassy of Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts to present new audiences with these works.”
Reel Kanata II is the follow up programme to last year’s presentation, also held at the Embassy of Canada. This year, Ryle selected eight short films from imagineNATIVE’s recent Festivals, including the Oscar short-listed Throat Song (produced by Stacey Aglok MacDonald) and Wakening (directed by Danis Goulet), which opened the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
In addition to the two screenings of Reel Kanata II, Ryle will moderate an Artist Talk with Tyler Hagan, whose installation In the Similkameen (created in partnership with imagineNATIVE and NFB Interactive) is programmed as part of the Berlinale’s Forum Expanded. Ryle will also moderate the NATIVe Industry Talkpanel and the Indigenous Cinema: Now and Then panel for the International Sámi Film Centre; these panels will focus on the business, art and culture of Indigenous Cinema.
