“Two homeless Indigenous friends order breakfast in an unusual location. But what’s on the menu?”
The intriguing brief description sets the stage for “Stray Cats,” the all-Indigenous entry in this year’s Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays (oneactplayfestival.com). Produced by the Very Useful Theatre Company, the festival runs Sept. 7 to 10 at the Old Town Hall at 460 Botsford St.
The dramedy is the Sept. 9 matinee performance, with part of the proceeds being donated to Inn from the Cold.
“Stray Cats” was written by Derek Groulx. He will perform in the play alongside Osawa Muskwa, who has just been nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for his portrayal of a father in the series “Little Bird” on Crave, a powerful drama about the Sixties Scoop, the mass forced and devastating removal of Indigenous children from their families into the child welfare system.
