Indigenous Identity Theft Summit held in Winnipeg – The Graphic Leader

May 21, 2024

The Indigenous Peoples Alliance of Manitoba (IPAM) is the Manitoba provincial representative of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP), a national body that represents all Indigenous people, whether identified as non-status Indian, Métis, Inuit, or status Indian who live off-reserve, in either urban or rural areas across Canada.

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) along with the Chiefs of Ontario (COO) hosted an “Indigenous Identity Theft Summit” in Winnipeg on May 14 and 15, 2024 for Indigenous groups who “…have concerns about the wholesale theft of their respective identities by those seeking to use them for their own purposes or gains”.[1] This is ironic coming from the MMF, who have been regularly changing the definition of who qualifies to be a Métis person since their withdrawal from the Métis National Council (MNC) in September 2021.

CAP and IPAM requested attendance for their representatives for the Indigenous Identity Theft Summit. Both the MMF and COO declined to allow CAP or IPAM representation.
