Indigenous LPGA member Destiny Whitney is helping to empower women in sports – SCOREGolf

November 10, 2023

Inspired by her grandmother, Tsuut’ina Nation member Destiney Whitney fell in love with golf at a young age and is now an LPGA professional.

Destiny Whitney does not know how her late grandmother, Gladys Patsy Muriel Whitney, began playing golf. After all, Gladys grew up on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation near the Pas, Manitoba, and spent her childhood in the residential school system.

What Whitney does know is that her grandmother’s love of the game spawned two more generations of passionate Indigenous women golfers, with Destiny now a Class A LPGA professional.

The eldest of six siblings, Whitney grew up on the Tsuut’ina Nation outside Calgary. Her grandmother married into that community in the 1940s and firmly believed that sport equaled opportunity. She therefore ensured her children and grandchildren, including Destiny, were participating in as many sports as possible.
