Indigenous Owned Cosmetics Company Acquires Indigenous Investments
COAST SALISH TERRITORY (Vancouver, BC) October 28, 2019…For the first time ever, an Indigenous owned Cosmetic Canadian company received a major new investment from an Indigenous owned investment firm. Raven Indigenous Capital Partners announced an investment of $350,000 for Cheekbone Beauty Cosmetics; a leading Indigenous natural cosmetics company headquartered in St. Catharine’s, Ontario.
“With this investment from Raven Capital, Cheekbone Beauty can focus on developing products that continue to positively impact Indigenous youth and use innovation to create eco-conscious products. Teaching that green is not only the new glam but the right thing to do,” said Jenn Harper, CEO of Cheekbone Beauty Cosmetics.
The Indigenous owned, socially conscious, Beauty Company focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: economic, environmental, and social—also known informally as profits, planet, and people.
Through Cheekbone’s partnership with the First Nation’s Child and Family Caring Society, the beauty company is addressing social injustices by ensuring Indigenous children receive adequate education funding. The investment by Raven Capital believes in Jenn’s vision, as they understand the economic fabric in Canada and believe that they’re helping to decolonize the market place by these investments. Cheekbone Beauty has improved sales and now sufficiently resourcing a strong environmental stewardship mission throughout its supply chain, product offerings, and packaging.
“Cheekbone Beauty represents the cutting edge of what Indigenous business globally can be. With Raven’s investment in Cheekbone it helps Jenn build out her new sustainable product line that is sure to wow the marketplace and solidify her expansion. This investment highlights once again that it’s not just a great Indigenous business but that it is best in class anywhere,” said Jeff Cyr, Managing Partner, Raven Indigenous Capital Partners.
Founded by Jenn Harper (an Anishinaabe marketing professional) in 2016, the company launched its branded product line using a sophisticated brand ambassador social media strategy, and now ships lipsticks, glosses, contour kits, and brow products across Canada, the United States, and Australia. Cheekbone also embeds a deep social mission in its business model, donating ten percent of profits to the First Nation’s Child and Family Caring Society. Prior to this investment, Jenn had bootstrapped Cheekbone Beauty, while raising a family and working full-time. Jenn Harper’s appearance on the Dragon’s Den last month proved their needs to be alternative capital for Indigenous entrepreneurs.
