Indigenous Tourism Falling Short of Potential – TravelPulse Canada

It’s no surprise to anyone in the industry that the pandemic was a very bad thing for tourism. For the most part, things have rebounded, in some cases even exceeding pre-pandemic numbers. For Indigenous tourism offerings, returning to the record successes of 2019 has not happened. A new report conducted by the Conference Board of Canada (CBOC) and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) asserts that even though demand for Indigenous tourism experiences is rising, the sector is hobbled by the dual forces of inflationary pressure and a shortage of workers.

“The tourism sector is facing greater inflationary pressures than other sectors,” said Alan Chaffe, Associate Director of Economic Research at The Conference Board of Canada. “Prices for tourism-related goods and services in 2023 were an estimated 18.8 per cent higher than in 2019—exceeding the economy-wide inflation rate of 15.5 per cent over the same period.”
