Interim Electricity Rates effective April 1, 2025 – General Rate Application

The Utility Rates Review Council (URRC) has authorized Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) to implement interim electricity rates, effective April 1, 2025.

QEC submitted a General Rate Application (GRA) to the Minister responsible on November 29, 2024, requesting rate increases to meet the utility’s revenue needs for the 2025–2026 fiscal year.

“Our priority is providing Nunavut with reliable and secure electricity,” said QEC President and CEO Ernest Douglas. “These rate adjustments are necessary to upgrade aging infrastructure and support the territory’s growing energy demands.”

The interim rates will remain in place until final rates are approved. Customers will first see the increase reflected on their April power bill, which will be sent out in mid-May. If the final rates are lower than the interim rates, customers will receive a refund for the difference. These temporary adjustments help ensure the continued safety and resiliency of QEC’s operations.

Changes to the Interim Rates Include:

For Residential Customers:

• Residential Monthly Service Charge: From $18 to $36 per month
  This increase will be fully covered by the Nunavut Electricity Subsidy Program (NESP), and customers will not be billed for this charge
• Energy Rate (for Residential non-Government/Municipal Tax Base): From$0.6733 to $0.7494 per kWh
  A residential customer using 500 kWh monthly will see an increase of approximately $14 per month.
• Energy Rate (for Residential Government): From $1.0221 to $1.1300 per kWh
  A government residential customer using 2000 kWh monthly will see an increase of $71 per month.

For Commercial Customers:

• Commercial Demand Service Charge (Non-Government): From $8 to $16 per kW
• Energy Rate (for Commercial Non-Government/Municipal Tax Base): From$0.5554 to $0.6208 per kWh
  Non-government commercial customers using 500 kWh monthly will see an increase of approximately $156 per month.
• Energy Rate (for Commercial Government): From $0.9518 to $1.0533 per kWh
  Government commercial customers using 2000 kWh monthly will see an increase of approximately $235 per month.

For Municipal Customers

-LED Streetlights:
60 watts from $25.06 to $28.51 per month
90 watts from $37.61 to $42.77 per month
210 watts from $87.75 to $99.79 per month
