‘It did happen. It’s still happening’: As Niagara marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, many survivors still struggle with the past – St. Catharines Standard

While children are aware of the abuse First Nations people suffered, it’s something some adults continue to deny.

Lori Marquis struggled with her emotions as she thought about National Day for Truth and Reconciliation observances taking place Tuesday.

It’s difficult for the 53-year-old Welland resident. She was abruptly taken from her home at five years of age along with her two sisters and endured years of abuse in a residential school while her youth and innocence were taken from her.

She said her experience continued to haunt her through her adult life as she became a parent herself.
