Justice is Served as Serial Killer is Sentenced to 25 Years with no chance of parole

Press Release

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Today, we witness a moment of justice for the families of the four Indigenous women whose lives were tragically cut short by the actions of Jeremy Skibicki. The conviction of Skibicki for 1st-degree murder and the subsequent life term sentencing mark a significant, though bittersweet, step in acknowledging the profound loss endured by our communities.

We commend the court for upholding the conviction and rejecting the defense argument that sought to absolve Skibicki of responsibility due to a mental disorder. This verdict recognizes the gravity of his crimes and serves as a crucial reaffirmation that the lives of Indigenous women and girls are valued, and that justice will be pursued with the seriousness it deserves.

To the Myran, Harris, Contois and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman) families, our hearts and thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time. We understand that no sentence can ever fully heal the pain of your loss or bring back your loved ones, but we hope that it brings some measure of solace and acknowledges the strength and courage you have shown throughout this difficult journey.

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak remains committed in its dedication to support you as you navigate the path ahead. We will continue to advocate for the necessary resources and services to assist in your healing process and ensure that the search for justice does not end with this verdict. Our work to bring all missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls home and to address the systemic issues contributing to these tragedies remains unwavering.

We also call upon all levels of government and society to redouble efforts in the fight against the violence targeting Indigenous women and girls. It is crucial that we create and implement policies that protect and empower our communities, ensuring that every missing person is sought with urgency and every victim is remembered with dignity.

In this moment of reflection and resolution, let us honor the memory of those we have lost by continuing to fight for a future where no family must endure such heartache. To the families of the victims, you are not alone; we stand with you, committed to advocating for justice and supporting you every step of the way.
