An all-online format resulted in numerous questions covering a wide variety of topics being asked at Tuesday’s all-candidates forum held at the McArthur Island Sport and Events Centre.
A total of 42 questions were posed to candidates over two debates — the first featuring Kamloops-North Thompson candidates Maddi Genn of the NDP and Ward Stamer of the B.C. Conservatives, and the second involving the NDP’s Kamal Grewal, B.C. Conservative Peter Milobar and Green Party candidate Randy Sunderman.
In the Kamloops-North Thompson debate, candidates answered 18 questions from prospective voters via Slido, while those running in Kamloops Centre got through 12. Those were in addition to the six questions each group received from the host organizations Castanet Kamloops, the Kamloops and District Chamber of Commerce, CFJC, Radio NL and the North Shore and Kamloops Central business improvement associations.
The question topics varied, with queries on affordability, the environment, myriad healthcare issues, education, crime, involuntary drug treatment, reducing costs for businesses, LGBTQ matters, rebuilding the Red Bridge, re-establishing a newspaper in Kamloops and support for the arts. There were also questions about support for seniors, accountability, housing and the future of UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) in provincial policy.
