Susan Read and her Belgian Malinois Zappa hope to help provide closure as part of a historical human remains detection dog team.
While most families were busy preparing Thanksgiving celebrations, Susan Read and her search and rescue dog Zappa were involved in a different kind of “giving.”
Recently, the duo joined Ottawa Valley Search and Rescue Dog Association (OVSARDA) historical human remains detection dog teams as they searched the grounds of a residential school for unmarked graves near Sault Ste. Marie. The activity followed two other similar searches that took place in Quebec during the summer.
“We started training right after the news broke about the discovery at the former residential school in Kamloops (in May 2021),” said OVSARDA team manager Kim Cooper.
