Kawartha Lakes Public Library Honours National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with Special Events

Kawartha Lakes – In honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Kawartha Lakes Public Library is proud to present several events designed to promote understanding, dialogue, and respect for Indigenous cultures and histories. This important day, held annually on September 30, serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward reconciliation and the need to acknowledge the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Event Highlights:

Children’s Craft Event: Kids are invited to visit their local library branch on Saturday September 28 between 10am and 2pm to participate in a beaded bracelet workshop. This free workshop will also be offered at the Bobcaygeon, Dalton, Fenelon Falls, Little Britain, Lindsay, Norland and Woodville branches during their respective open hours on Monday September 30.

Adult Craft Event: Library patrons are invited to visit their local library branch on Saturday September 28 between 10am and 2pm to participate in an Orange Shirt Day magnet making workshop. This free workshop will also be offered at the Bobcaygeon, Dalton, Fenelon Falls, Little Britain, Lindsay, Norland and Woodville branches during their respective open hours on Monday September 30.

Book Displays at all Branches:  Library patrons are invited to view our displays of reading material focused on Indigenous authors as well as titles related to Truth and Reconciliation. Our friendly and helpful library staff can offer guidance in selecting a suitable title. You can also visit the library’s Indigenous webpage at www.kawarthalakeslibrary.ca/indigenous to learn more about Indigenous history, including the Residential School experience and the ongoing Truth and Reconciliation process. Links on that webpage will lead you to our online catalogue where you can easily browse the library’s entire collection of Indigenous reading materials.

Children’s Talking Circle for Truth and Reconciliation:  Monday September 30 from 4pm to 4:30pm at the Lindsay branch. Join library staff for an Indigenous guided event that will allow children to appropriately honour the victims of Residential Schools. Please meet in Queen’s Park, in front of the Lindsay branch at 190 Kent Street West. This presentation will be geared towards school aged children accompanied by a parent, guardian or caregiver. If weather is inclement, please join us inside the library for this event.

Adult Talking Circle for Truth and Reconciliation:  Monday September 30 from 6pm to 6:30pm at the Lindsay branch. Join library staff for an Indigenous guided event that will honour National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. This event will include a presentation on Residential Schools and their impact on Indigenous culture and communities. Please meet in Queen’s Park in front of Lindsay branch 190 Kent Street West. If weather is inclement, please join us inside the library for this event.
