Dakota Bear created Land Back Records as a platform to support the growth of Indigenous musicians in an industry not built with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in mind.
The Vancouver-based project, which Bear co-founded with Casey Desjarlais about two years ago, doesn’t operate like a traditional record label. Instead of signing artists and creating deals, it focuses on providing a range of opportunities for Indigenous musicians.
“We’ve helped artists push their first project, helped artists record their first songs; some of them [land their] first festival performances,” Bear says via phone. “I think just any and all support, showing that as Indigenous people, it’s important to support each other.”
