Makigiaqta Announces $12 Million in Funding to Support Training and Post-Secondary Education for Nunavut Inuit

Press Release

Earlier this week, the Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation (Makigiaqta) Board of Directors approved $12 million in funding support for training and post-secondary education for Nunavut Inuit.

Makigiaqta approved a policy on Large-Scale Initiatives Supporting Inuit in Post-Secondary Education which will provide funding of $5 million dollars in both the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025. The funding is an addition to Inuit Post-Secondary Education (IPSE) programs jointly administered by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc (NTI) and the three regional Inuit associations; Kitikmeot Inuit Association, Kivalliq Inuit Association, and Qikiqtani Inuit Association. The number of Inuit students pursuing post secondary education and applying for IPSE funding outnumbered the funds available in all regions. The new policy and approved funds will empower Inuit students with the essential resources for academic success.

“It is inspiring to see so many Inuit students advancing their knowledge and skills in post-secondary institutions, and I am so pleased that we are able to support them in reaching their goals,” said NTI President and Makigiaqta Chair, Aluki Kotierk.

In addition, the Makigiaqta Board approved a new policy providing $1 million dollars for the Makigiaqta Post-Secondary Education Funding Program, effective April 1, 2024. The program offers engagement, funding, and hands-on support for Inuit individuals accepted into post-secondary degree programs, and goes beyond learner sponsorship, providing additional funding to support educational, training, and employment development initiatives.

The Makigiaqta Board approved a revised policy for the Quvvariarniq Program, providing mentorship funding opportunities for both organizations, as well as individual Nunavut Inuit. The program budget for 2024-25 was set at $1 million dollars.
