A man who was designated a dangerous offender and sentenced to an indefinite period of imprisonment is set to be re-sentenced in NWT Supreme Court next month.
Noel Avadluk, now 52, was convicted of a “sudden, brutal and sustained” sexual assault which occurred in Yellowknife in 2012.
His lengthy criminal record included eight convictions for violent crimes. Experts testified he was at high risk to reoffend violently.
In 2017, Justice Karan Shaner designated Avadluk a dangerous offender and sentenced him to a period of imprisonment with no end date. (Judges can sentence a dangerous offender to an indefinite term to ensure they are not released until their risk of reoffending is significantly reduced.)
