Manitoba Government Engaging With 2SLGBTQIA+ Community to Improve Services

Press Release

The Manitoba government is launching a new online survey aimed at understanding how to better serve 2SLGBTQIA+ people, Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine, minister responsible for women and gender equity, announced today.

“Our government has already taken concrete steps to work with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, instead of targeting them like the previous government,” said Fontaine. “We’ve passed legislation to support name changes for transgender people, increased access to HIV drugs and declared March 31 Two-Spirit and Transgender Day of Visibility in Manitoba. We are listening to 2SLGBTQIA+ Manitobans to build strong, collaborative relationships and hear how we can continue to better support their needs.”

The minister noted the new engagement, which launches today on EngageMB, will inform the Manitoba government’s ongoing efforts to amend policies, remove barriers and improve access to make government services more equitable for 2SLGBTQIA+ Manitobans.

The engagement was designed in partnership with a 2SLGBTQI+ community advisory circle, which included members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and organizations serving them including representatives from 2Spirited People of Manitoba Inc., Sunshine House, Klinic Community Health, Rainbow Resource Centre, Pride Winnipeg, the Sexuality Education Resource Centre and others.

The minister noted the engagement is part of Women and Gender Equity Manitoba’s expanded mandate to work with government departments and front-line community organizations to support systemic change for 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
