Press Release
(Kahnawà:ke – 6, Enníska/February 2025) The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Brandon Montour and Ms. Aubrey Charette as Decision-makers to the Administrative Tribunal. Appointed by Mohawk Council Executive Directive on February 3, 2025, their five-year terms are part of the ongoing implementation of the Kahnawà:ke Justice Act (Justice Act).
The Administrative Tribunal, a cornerstone of the Justice Act, reviews and corrects administrative decisions, offering a more flexible and user-friendly alternative to traditional courts.
“This is a major milestone in the implementation of the Kahnawà:ke Justice Act, as they will be playing a key role in our justice system moving forward,” said Commissioner of Justice Kevin Fleischer. “Kahnawà:ke has long been a trailblazer and leader in First Nations justice, and we continue that proud tradition with this appointment and the forthcoming implementation of our comprehensive Administrative Tribunal – a first-of-its-kind in First Nations justice in the country.”
Mr. Montour, a McGill University Faculty of Law graduate, holds multiple degrees and is pursuing a Doctor of Juridical Sciences at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He previously chaired the Kahnawà:ke Cannabis Control Board.
Ms. Charette, a graduate of Oxford University and McGill University’s Faculty of Law, is a member of the New York and Ontario Bar Associations and runs a law practice in Ottawa. She is a member of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation.
They will begin their duties after an orientation, with full Tribunal implementation expected in spring 2025.
