(Kahnawake – 6, Tsothóhrha/December 2022) The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Ohén:ton Í:iente ne Ratitsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer is in Ottawa attending the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly.
She is being accompanied by Chief Political Advisor Winona Polson-Lahache.
Agenda items include a decision on the Final Settlement Agreement on Compensation and Long-Term Reform of the First Nations Child & Family Services Program and Jordan’s Principle; a presentation by the Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Residential Schools; the United Nations Declaration on the Rights on Indigenous Peoples Act; Climate Change; Fishing Rights; Housing; and Infrastructure and Safe Water legislation.
Federal ministers Marc Miller (Indigenous Crown Relations) and Marc Mendicino (Public Safety Canada) have confirmed their attendance for portions of the meetings.
The Special Assembly takes place from today until Thursday.
