Press Release
August 28, 2024
Premier and Minister of Justice, R.J. Simpson, joins the RCMP in the Northwest Territories in welcoming its new Commanding Officer of “G” Division, Chief Superintendent Dyson Smith:
“I am pleased to welcome Chief Superintendent Smith to his new position. RCMP in the Northwest Territories play a critical role in preserving community safety and I look forward to advancing our shared goals and priorities under his leadership. Chief Superintendent Smith is a Kespu’kwitk East-Coast Métis and has over 24 years of experience in many different policing environments across Canada, including in Alberta, Nunavut, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories.
“Chief Superintendent Smith brings a wealth of experience that will serve him and “G” Division as they work together with communities to provide effective and collaborative policing services across the territory. The NWT policing priorities for 2024-2027 include building strong relationships with Indigenous communities and residents; targeting enforcement responses to reduce illegal drugs and alcohol; reducing harm to Indigenous women, girls and families, and children; and increasing awareness of RCMP roles and responsibilities. I look forward to working with Chief Superintendent Smith as he leads “G” Division in improving community safety for NWT residents.”
“I would also like to thank Chief Superintendent Sydney (Syd) Lecky for his service and dedication to the people of the Northwest Territories during his time as the Commanding Officer of “G” Division.”
