Press Release
We were saddened to learn of the recent incident in the community of Elsipogtog, and our hearts go out to our Members and everyone in the community. These incidents are devastating for residents and for our Members, who are highly trained to handle such challenging situations and are also deeply affected by them.
Policing should not be politicized, and rash commentary by political leaders and academics is neither necessary nor helpful. We remind all elected officials and candidates in the upcoming provincial election of the importance of allowing a full and transparent investigation by the independent Serious Incident Response Team and to reserve judgement and public commentary until the findings are known.
As some have noted, police are far too often the only service available when other social systems have failed. This needs to change. Governments at all levels must commit to funding and delivering comprehensive public safety plans and services that address the root causes of crime to prevent such incidents from happening.
Our Members work hard every day to keep the communities where they and their families live safe. We will continue to support those involved, their colleagues, and their broader community.
About the National Police Federation:
The National Police Federation (NPF) represents ~20,000 RCMP Members serving across Canada and internationally. We are the largest police union in Canada. The NPF is focused on improving public safety for all Canadians, including our Members by advocating for much-needed investment in the public safety continuum. This includes investments in police resourcing and modern equipment, as well as social programs including health, addiction, and housing supports to enhance safety and livability in the many communities we serve, large and small, across Canada.
