Message from President Beverly Slater

Press Release

Dear Tahltan Membership,

I am humbled and honored by the trust you have shown in electing me as TCG President.

Since being elected on May 26th, I immediately began an exit strategy from the responsibility I have to my law firm and to my clients, so that I could focus my full attention on my duties as President.

In addition, I immediately began to immerse myself in onboarding and getting up to speed with the countless initiatives, challenges and risks our Nation faces.

My commitment to our Nation is and will remain steadfast, guided by these principles:

1. Transparency – Ensuring openness in all our actions.

2. Accountable governance – Being responsible for our decisions.

3. Focus on serving Tahltan families, including empowering our youth and cherishing our elders.

4. Unity – Fostering unity and standing together as one Nation.

5. Pursuing common goals – Working towards shared aspirations.

6. Upholding Tahltan values and culture – Preserving our culture and heritage.

7. Meaningful engagement and guidance – Your voices will shape our path.

I am eager to engage with our Nation and our workforce, understand your needs, and work together for a prosperous future.

Since my position as President is on an interim basis, I will continue to maintain my house in Terrace; however, I am excited to say that I have officially found a house and have taken residence in Dease Lake, where I intend to spend most of my time working in Territory.

I have been coming to Territory for over two decades; however, living here has already and will continue to give me fresh perspective of the challenges our people face living and protecting our Territory. The cost of food, gas and lack of housing/infrastructure is an issue I intend to address while working hand in hand with our Chiefs.

Our Nation is resilient, proud, and abundantly capable. Time and again, our ancestors triumphed over the many challenges they faced. We are no exception. Let us honour their legacy, embrace their wisdom, and continue to build a future that reflects our shared vision and values – one based on respect, understanding and shared objectives.

Mēduh,

President Beverly Slater
