MKO Congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party on Forming a New Government, and Looks Forward to Future Discussions on Northern First Nations Priorities

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) welcomes the election of Prime Minister Mark Carney and the next Government of Canada.

MKO would also like to congratulate Manitoba’s elected First Nations Members of Parliament (Liberal)Rebecca Chartrand in Churchill-Keewatinook Aski and (NDP)Leah Gazan in Winnipeg Centre.

MKO also extends congratulations to Grand Chief Mandy Gull-Masty’s election victory as the Liberal candidate in northern Quebec.

To every First Nations citizen who cast a ballot; your united voice made a powerful impact.

“Northern First Nations have been clear about their priorities; infrastructure, housing, healthcare, policing, economic reconciliation, families and our children,” said MKO’s Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “Our rights must be respected; our voice must be heard. We look forward to working with Prime Minister Carney and his Liberal government as we define a new future for First Nations people in Northern Manitoba.”

MKO welcomes the new Liberal Government’s commitment to fully implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). This pledge is a significant step towards reconciliation and respect for First Nations inherent rights. Our MKO team is currently advocating at the United Nations, to ensure these rights are enforced globally.

We look forward to working together with Prime Minister Carney and his new cabinet to achieve meaningful progress for First Nations in Manitoba.
