MNBC Hosts Adoption Gathering to Strengthen Support for Métis Families

Press Release

August 28, 2024

In a significant step towards improving adoption care and support for Métis families, Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) hosted an impactful Adoption Gathering on July 18th. This event was designed to engage with Métis adoptive parents, non-Métis adoptive parents, Métis birth parents, and Métis adoptees to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and challenges within the adoption system in British Columbia.

The primary aim of the gathering was to collect valuable insights and perspectives to inform the development of evidence-based practices for adoption. By evaluating different adoption approaches, MNBC hopes to enhance decision-making, program development, and policy recommendations, ensuring they are rooted in the lived experiences of those directly affected.

One of the memorable activities of the gathering was the “yarn game,” where participants shared their stories and ideas for supporting Métis children and families. This activity involved passing a ball of yarn around, with each participant contributing their narrative. The resulting interconnected yarn strands symbolized a rich tapestry of collective experiences, echoing the significance of Métis sashes as symbols of unity and resilience.

Recruitment of Métis Adoptive Parents

MNBC is also calling on Métis individuals who are interested in adoption to consider opening their hearts and homes to Métis children. If you want to explore adoption, reach out to MNBC’s Ministry of Children & Families. By adopting a Métis child, families can help preserve and celebrate Métis cultural heritage while providing a nurturing environment. Quote from an Elder

Elder Marie Bercier captured the essence of family with a moving quote:

“Family isn’t about the people in your life who are blood relations. It’s about the people in your life who want you to be in theirs. It’s about the people in your life who accept you for who you are, support you in the things you choose to do and no matter what, are there for you. It’s the people in your life who love you, respect you, and who you can depend on. Now that is Family!”

The Adoption Gathering marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing effort to build stronger, culturally connected families within the Métis community. By working together and drawing on shared experiences, MNBC is paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive adoption system.

We invite you to complete this Adoption Survey. Your support will allow us to create a Métis Family Service Model that reflects the specific needs of our community and brings our children back home.
