Students, staff and faculty seeking Indigenous-specific opportunities will be asked to declare their affiliation with an Indigenous Nation and provide supporting information.
The University of Victoria introduced a new policy on Wednesday to ensure Indigenous jobs, awards and scholarships go to Indigenous recipients.
UVic’s new Indigenous Citizenship Declaration Policy comes into effect on Nov. 1 and revises the criteria for Indigenous-specific opportunities that result in material gain.
The policy, years in the making, stems in part from questions that arose in 2022 about the Indigenous citizenship claims of American singer Buffy Sainte-Marie and former judge Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond. In the wake of the revelations, universities promised to improve their vetting processes.
